India's First Green Steel Production Facility Marks a Milestone in Sustainable Manufacturing
Key Ideas
  • India's first and largest green steel production facility established through a collaboration between Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables.
  • The facility will operate using 100% green hydrogen, significantly reducing CO2 emissions in steel production.
  • The project, supported by government incentives and national initiatives, reflects a commitment to sustainable development and clean energy solutions.
  • This innovative approach to steel production aims to set a new standard for eco-friendly iron manufacturing in India, marking a major leap forward in the industry.
Gensol Engineering Limited and Matrix Gas & Renewables have come together to establish India's first and largest green steel production facility. This facility will operate using 100% green hydrogen, a significant step towards sustainable steel manufacturing. The project, part of the national green hydrogen mission, is backed by MECON and involves collaboration with the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. With a projected total capex of ₹321 crore, the government is offering 50% capex incentives to support the endeavor. By utilizing direct reduced iron vertical shaft technology and green hydrogen derived from renewable sources, the facility will replace coal and natural gas, leading to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. The pilot plant, with a production capacity of fifty tons per day, involves collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Sweden's Metsol AB. The project aligns with India's vision for sustainable development and showcases the country's commitment to green energy solutions and industrial progress. This initiative not only demonstrates a shift towards clean energy in steel production but also sets a new standard for eco-friendly iron manufacturing in India, emphasizing innovation and collaboration in the industry.
