The Indian Government, under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MRNE), is embarking on a significant initiative to promote the use of hydrogen-powered transportation in the country. Five pilot projects are set to be launched across 10 key routes, involving the testing of 37 hydrogen fuel cell and internal combustion engine vehicles for public transport operations. These projects will also include the establishment of nine refuelling stations in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Bhubaneswar. Major companies such as Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland have been tasked with implementing these projects, with a total government support of approximately 2.08m rupees ($23m). The aim of these pilot projects is to showcase the safe and effective operation of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations, validate their technical feasibility and performance, and evaluate their economic viability. This initiative falls under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which is driving the nation's hydrogen market towards its ambitious target of 5 million tonnes per annum by 2030. The projects aim to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technology in the transportation sector, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for India.
