India's Steel Ministry is actively working on the country's first Green Steel Mission, which aims to promote the production of steel using low-carbon energy sources and with reduced carbon emissions. The Ministry is also focusing on defining 'green steel' and considering grading based on emission intensity to encourage eco-friendly steel production. Additionally, the Ministry has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to incorporate hydrogen in steel production. These projects, receiving a total financial support of ₹347 crore, are geared towards reducing coal or coke usage and injecting hydrogen in different stages of the steel-making process. Companies like Matrix Gas and Renewable Ltd, Steel Authority of India Ltd, and Simplex Castings Ltd have been selected to carry out these pilot projects with different capacities, aiming to pave the way for sustainable and environmentally friendly steel production in India. With government support and a focus on transitioning to a green economy, these initiatives are crucial steps towards a more sustainable future for the steel industry in the country.
