  • The Fiji Gas Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator Demonstration Project, a partnership between Fiji Gas, Obayashi Corporation, and Halcyon Power, was inaugurated in Lautoka, showcasing the use of green hydrogen.
  • The project, funded partially by the Ministry of Economy and the government of Japan, operates on a blend of green hydrogen and diesel at the Veitari site, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and maintain energy output.
  • Obayashi Corporation and Tūaropaki Trust's joint venture, Halcyon Power, integrates green hydrogen produced from geothermal energy in New Zealand into a dual-fuel generator, with aims to promote decarbonization in Fiji and the Pacific region.
  • Key stakeholders highlighted the significance of the project in demonstrating the viability of green hydrogen as an environmentally friendly energy source, acknowledging the support from the Fijian government.
The Fiji Gas Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator Demonstration Project, a collaborative initiative between Fiji Gas, Obayashi Corporation, and Halcyon Power, was officially launched in Lautoka, Fiji. The project, operational from February last year to January this year at the Veitari site in Lautoka, involves using a blend of green hydrogen and diesel to power a dual-fuel generator. This innovative approach aims to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring a stable energy supply. The green hydrogen utilized is produced from geothermal energy sources in New Zealand, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy generation. The project, which received partial funding from the Ministry of Economy and the government of Japan, emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in promoting renewable energy solutions. Stakeholders, including Fiji Gas Operations manager Abas Ali and Obayashi Corporation's managing executive officer Dr Kenichi Ando, expressed gratitude for the Fijian government's support. Tūaropaki Trust deputy chair Dr James Ataria highlighted the project's role in showcasing the practicality of green hydrogen for decarbonization efforts in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. The successful implementation of this project not only contributes to reducing carbon footprints but also sets a precedent for utilizing green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source in the region.
