Innovative Partnership for Hydrogen Retrofits in Maritime Sector
Key Ideas
  • Lomarlabs partners with Newlight to develop hydrogen retrofits for existing vessels, offering a practical solution to decarbonize ship by ship.
  • Newlight's dual-fuel retrofit technology aims to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, providing an immediate and scalable solution.
  • Collaboration with Lomar Shipping fleet shows promising results with potential savings of up to 30 percent, demonstrating the effectiveness of the retrofit technology.
  • Beyond hydrogen retrofits, lomarlabs is involved in various sustainable projects including CO2 emissions capture, methane reduction, and autonomous navigation technologies.
The maritime sector is actively exploring solutions to meet decarbonization targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Lomarlabs, the innovation arm of Lomar Shipping, has formed a partnership with Newlight, a startup, to address the challenge of extending the service lives of existing vessels through hydrogen retrofits. The CEO of Newlight, Haran Cohen Hillel, highlights the potential of hydrogen as a maritime fuel and emphasizes the importance of immediate action in decarbonizing ships individually to make a tangible impact. Newlight's dual-fuel retrofit technology is designed to enable existing vessels to integrate hydrogen as a fuel source, with an average fuel consumption reduction of 20 percent. By retrofitting diesel engines to run on a blend of hydrogen, the collaboration aims to offer a low Capex solution that significantly cuts emissions without requiring complete propulsion system overhauls. Lomarlabs and Newlight are planning a pilot installation on a Lomar vessel in summer 2025 to conduct trials and collect data on the performance of the retrofit technology. The strategic collaboration between the two entities focuses on practical innovation to bridge the current operational challenges with the long-term goal of achieving a net-zero maritime industry. In addition to the hydrogen retrofit project, lomarlabs is actively engaged in other sustainable initiatives such as CO2 emissions capture, methane reduction technologies, and autonomous navigation systems. Their diverse portfolio includes projects like autonomous magnetic crawler robots for hull cleaning and CargoKite, a concept involving high-altitude wind kites for autonomous ship propulsion. The collective efforts of lomarlabs and Newlight exemplify a positive step towards sustainable maritime practices and the adoption of innovative solutions for emissions reduction in the industry.
