MENA's Hydrogen Revolution: Aiming for Green Ambition by 2030
Key Ideas
- MENA region plans to produce 10 mtpa of hydrogen by 2030, with a focus on green hydrogen, requiring 128 GW of additional renewable capacity.
- Saudi Arabia leads with NEOM Green Hydrogen project targeting 1.2 mtpa, while UAE and Oman also have ambitious green hydrogen initiatives.
- Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman are key players with multiple hydrogen projects aiming to meet targets set by national strategies and innovation.
- 90% of projects in the region are focused on green hydrogen, with blue and yellow hydrogen also in the mix, showcasing a diverse approach to hydrogen production.
A report by Dubai-based Dii Desert Energy reveals the ambitious plans of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to produce nearly 10 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of hydrogen by 2030, predominantly focusing on green hydrogen. With over 110 hydrogen projects announced, the region aims to meet these targets by developing over 450 GW of renewable energy capacity. To achieve the 10 mtpa target, an estimated 128 GW of additional renewable capacity will be required. While the majority of the projects emphasize green hydrogen, some are also exploring blue and yellow hydrogen production methods involving fossil fuels and waste feedstock.
Saudi Arabia has set a high target, with the NEOM Green Hydrogen project aiming to produce 1.2 mtpa of green hydrogen through massive solar and wind projects. The UAE is positioning itself as a major low-emissions hydrogen producer by 2031, with a target of 1.4 mtpa, including green and blue hydrogen. Egypt leads with 29 announced projects, and Oman's state-run Hydrom is orchestrating green hydrogen developments.
The MENA region's hydrogen ambitions align with national strategies and innovation goals set by countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman. The diverse approach to hydrogen production, with a significant focus on green hydrogen, showcases a positive momentum towards sustainable energy practices in the region.
