Microsoft and ESB Pioneer Green Hydrogen Project to Power Dublin Data Centre
Key Ideas
  • Microsoft collaborates with ESB to launch a green hydrogen pilot project in Dublin, employing zero-emission fuel cells to power its data centre.
  • The initiative aims to eliminate carbon emissions and harmful pollutants, contributing significantly to sustainable energy practices in data center operations.
  • This innovative project sets the stage for decarbonizing the data sector and aligns with Microsoft's goal of a zero-waste, carbon-negative future by 2030.
Microsoft has announced a groundbreaking partnership with ESB in Dublin to introduce a pioneering green hydrogen project to power its data center. The project, utilizing Hydrogen Fuel Cells that emit only water, is a significant step towards sustainable energy practices in data center operations. This initiative, the first of its kind in Europe for Microsoft, is set to provide 250kW of clean energy over an eight-week period. By converting green hydrogen into electricity with zero carbon emissions and local air pollutants, the technology employed by ESB offers a clean alternative to traditional diesel generators. Microsoft's Vice President and EMEA Regional Leader, Eoin Doherty, emphasized the project's potential to advance sustainability within and beyond the sector if scaled successfully. The General Manager of Microsoft's EMEA Data Centre Operations, Lavinia Morris, highlighted the pilot project as an important step in transitioning to carbon-free electricity across their global infrastructure. Jim Dollard, ESB Executive Director, underlined the alignment of this initiative with future energy systems and the role of green hydrogen in achieving a net-zero energy future. Microsoft's commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through investments in renewable energy contracts, supporting Ireland's corporate power purchase agreement target for 2030. This pilot project not only showcases Microsoft's dedication to reducing environmental impact but also showcases their efforts in enhancing the sustainability of their operations worldwide.
