Ministry of Steel's Initiatives for Green Transition in the Steel Industry
Key Ideas
- Ministry of Steel has awarded pilot projects to produce DRI using 100% Hydrogen and to reduce coal/coke consumption in Blast Furnace under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- Initiatives like Taxonomy for Green Steel, Steel Scrap Recycling Policy, and Vehicle Scrapping Rules aim to encourage greener production technologies in the steel industry.
- Ministry of Steel, along with other ministries, is promoting the use of solar energy and enhancing scrap availability to reduce emissions in the steel sector.
- No mandatory procurement policy for green steel by government agencies has been issued by the Ministry of Steel yet.
The Ministry of Steel in India has set up 14 Task Forces to address the decarbonisation of the steel industry. As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Steel has initiated two pilot projects to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% Hydrogen and one pilot project to incorporate hydrogen in Blast Furnaces to lower coal and coke consumption. The Ministry has introduced various policies like the Taxonomy for Green Steel, Steel Scrap Recycling Policy, and Vehicle Scrapping Rules to promote greener production practices and reduce the environmental impact of the steel industry. Additionally, the Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to enhance scrap availability, promote solar energy usage, and transition the steel industry towards sustainability. The initiatives reflect a positive approach towards green transition and emission reduction in the steel sector.
