Modi Government's Green Initiative: Pilot Projects for Hydrogen in Steelmaking
Key Ideas
  • The Indian government has sanctioned three pilot projects for using hydrogen in steel production to promote green technology and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Financial support of Rs 347 crore will be provided by the government for these pilot projects, which are expected to be operational within the next three years.
  • Selected companies and consortiums like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings, and Steel Authority of India Ltd will implement pilot projects ranging from 40 to 3,200 tonnes-per-day capacity.
The Narendra Modi-led Central government in India has taken a significant step towards promoting green technology in the steel industry by sanctioning three pilot projects for the use of hydrogen. These projects aim to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable steel production. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has allocated a financial support of Rs 347 crore for these projects, which are expected to be completed within the next three years. The selected companies and consortiums for these projects include Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings, and Steel Authority of India Ltd. The pilot projects will focus on various aspects such as producing directly reduced iron using 100% hydrogen, reducing coal/coke consumption in blast furnaces, and injecting hydrogen in DRI making units. The main goals of these projects are to demonstrate the safe operation of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes, validate technical feasibility and performance, and evaluate economic viability for low-carbon iron and steel production.
