Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has revealed its initiative to establish a 500 tonnes per annum (tpa) green hydrogen production unit within its refinery premises in Mangalore, India. This move is in alignment with India's Green Hydrogen Policy, emphasizing the production of green hydrogen through renewable sources. The green hydrogen generated will be blended with the existing hydrogen produced at the refinery for internal use, aiming towards sustainable practices. MRPL's annual report for 2023-24 also highlighted the collaboration with CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) to develop Iso Butyl Benzene (IBB) process technology, essential for pharmaceutical and perfume industries. A pilot-cum-demo plant for IBB is in the works, leveraging captive feedstock available within MRPL. The company's expansion plans extend to setting up a marketing terminal in Bengaluru to cater to petroleum product needs in Karnataka. This terminal will receive finished petroleum products from MRPL through existing infrastructure, facilitating supply to various outlets. Additionally, MRPL is focusing on petrochemical growth, renewable fuels, and plans to incorporate bio-ATF and 2G ethanol technologies. In the realm of crude oil procurement, MRPL acquired 16.76 million tonnes in 2023-24, processing new crudes and aiming to adapt its business strategies for future growth. The company's commitment to sustainable practices, innovation in petrochemicals, and business expansion signifies a positive outlook for MRPL's future endeavors.
