Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has unveiled plans for a 500 tpa green hydrogen production unit within its refinery premises, in line with India's focus on green hydrogen as per the Green Hydrogen Policy. This green hydrogen will be blended with the existing hydrogen for internal use. Additionally, MRPL, in collaboration with CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, has developed Iso Butyl Benzene (IBB) process technology, which has secured a patent. The company is also working on setting up a pilot-cum-demo plant for IBB production. MRPL is further expanding its operations by constructing a marketing terminal in Devangonthi, Bengaluru, to supply petroleum products in Karnataka efficiently. The company aims to diversify into chemicals, renewable fuels, and other emerging areas to drive petrochemical growth. In the past fiscal year, MRPL procured 16.76 million tonnes of crude oil, both imported and domestic, and processed various new crudes. The company is adapting its business model to embrace green fuels like bio-ATF and 2G ethanol technologies, reflecting a positive and forward-looking approach towards sustainability and innovation in the petrochemical sector.
