NETL Unveils Innovative Cost Models for Hydrogen Transportation Infrastructure
Key Ideas
  • NETL released two cost models for hydrogen transport via new and existing pipelines to aid stakeholders in the hydrogen economy and decarbonization efforts.
  • The models support US DOE-funded hydrogen hub projects, aiming to deploy clean hydrogen for power, energy storage, and decarbonization of industry and transportation.
  • The tools estimate costs for gaseous hydrogen transport in new pipelines and upgrading existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen blends.
  • NETL's continuous enhancement of techno-economic analysis capabilities will drive the development of new supply chains crucial for the clean energy transition.
The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has introduced two innovative cost models to assess expenses related to transporting hydrogen, aiding stakeholders in the growing hydrogen economy and national decarbonization goals. These tools are crucial for decision-making processes, especially for projects like hydrogen hubs backed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. The models, H2_P_COM and NG-H2_P_COM, estimate costs for transporting gaseous hydrogen and upgrading existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen blends, respectively. By providing accurate cost estimates for pipeline transport, the models facilitate the successful deployment of projects connecting hydrogen producers with users. Additionally, the tools play a pivotal role in supporting the commercial-scale implementation of clean hydrogen for power generation, energy storage, and the decarbonization of heavy industry and transportation. The release of these tools demonstrates NETL's commitment to enhancing techno-economic analysis capabilities, which will be instrumental in developing new supply chains and decarbonization technologies necessary for the clean energy transition. NETL, as a DOE national laboratory, is dedicated to driving innovation and delivering solutions for a sustainable energy future by ensuring affordable and reliable energy while managing carbon emissions across the life cycle.
