The Minister of Environment in Nigeria, Balarabe Lawal, emphasized the country's strategic shift towards a green economy through various renewable projects, including hydrogen energy initiatives. Speaking at the Global Africa hydrogen summit in Namibia, Lawal outlined plans to position Nigeria as a leader in the African hydrogen economy by capitalizing on its vast resources and geographical advantages. The focus on green hydrogen production and export, supplemented by domestic use of blue hydrogen from natural gas, is expected to not only earn foreign exchange but also address the energy crisis in the country. With a commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2060, Nigeria aims to leverage renewable energy sources like sun, wind, and water/hydroelectric power to drive economic development and technological innovation in the clean energy sector. The collaboration with FuelCell Energy and Oando Clean Energy Limited signifies a significant step towards establishing large-scale green hydrogen power plants in the country, with a focus on technology transfer and job creation. The proposed partnership for a hydrogen plant in Kaduna State further underlines Nigeria's ambitions in the green energy space, highlighting its dedication to poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation.
