NTPC Launches Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister of Power flags off green hydrogen buses in Leh as part of NTPC's innovative project.
  • Project includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, green hydrogen filling station, and 5 hydrogen buses at high altitude.
  • NTPC's initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, increase oxygen levels, and promote energy self-sufficiency in Ladakh.
  • Expansion plans include more hydrogen projects nationwide and setting up a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
Union Minister Manohar Lal flagged off a fleet of green hydrogen buses in Leh, part of NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project. The project includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, a green hydrogen filling station, and 5 hydrogen buses capable of covering 300 km per fill. This initiative, located at an altitude of 3650 m, is designed to operate in low-density air and sub-zero temperatures, making it a unique and innovative project. The station is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 MT/year and contribute 230 MT/year of pure oxygen, equivalent to planting 13,000 trees. NTPC's focus on green hydrogen technologies and renewable energy capacity expansion is evident in their plans for more hydrogen mobility projects nationwide and the establishment of a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. The potential for green hydrogen solutions in Ladakh is significant due to high solar irradiance and low temperatures, offering a sustainable energy source that can make the region self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements.
