Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, recently inaugurated NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, India, by flagging off a fleet of green hydrogen buses. This project represents a significant milestone in the country's energy security and decarbonisation efforts. During the launch event, the Union Minister also commended NTPC for its commitment to adopting hydrogen technologies in various sectors such as mobility, blending with PNG, and green methanol production.
The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, a hydrogen filling station capable of producing 80 kg/day, and 5 hydrogen intra-city buses. These buses can cover a distance of 300 km on a single filling of hydrogen. Notably, this project is situated at the world's highest altitude Green Hydrogen Mobility Project and is designed to operate in challenging conditions such as low air density and sub-zero temperatures.
The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 metric tons per year and add 230 metric tons of oxygen annually to the atmosphere, equivalent to planting around 13,000 trees. The location's high solar irradiance combined with low temperatures makes it ideal for efficient solar power production and green hydrogen generation, ultimately reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting self-sufficiency in energy.
NTPC's plans extend beyond Leh, with upcoming hydrogen mobility projects and green hydrogen technology deployments across India. The company aims to rapidly increase its renewable energy capacity and establish a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable energy practices.
