Ohmium Signs Deal for 300MW Offshore Floating Ammonia Project with SwitcH2
Key Ideas
- Ohmium partners with SwitcH2 to supply 300MW offshore floating ammonia project with green hydrogen technology.
- 300MW of Ohmium's electrolysers to be installed on SwitcH2's FPSO vessel for industrial-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production.
- Facility expected to produce 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and almost 300,000 tonnes of ammonia annually, powered by near-shore solar and wind energy.
- SwitcH2 aims to start ammonia production by 2029, leveraging green ammonia as a clean fuel source for the global shipping industry.
Ohmium, a PEM electrolyser firm, has signed a term sheet with SwitcH2, a joint venture of BW Offshore, to supply a 300MW offshore floating ammonia project with green hydrogen production technology. The agreement involves developing PEM electrolyser solutions for SwitcH2's facility off the coast of Southern Europe. The project aims to establish an industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia production technology, with 300MW of Ohmium's electrolysers to be installed on SwitcH2's floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. The facility is projected to produce 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of ammonia annually, utilizing near-shore solar and wind power and treated seawater for electrolysis. The green hydrogen will be used in an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit for potential maritime fuel applications. SwitcH2 plans to commence ammonia production by 2029, supported by DNV's Approval in Principle and Dutch Government backing. Ohmium's CEO expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with SwitcH2 in meeting the rising demand for green ammonia in the shipping industry. Ohmium has recently expanded its operations, establishing a 2GW electrolyser factory in India to support its growing European projects.
