SSAB Joins Twinghy Project to Promote Hydrogen in Steel Industry
Key Ideas
- SSAB collaborates in the Twinghy project to advance hydrogen adoption in the steel sector.
- Twinghy project, partly funded by the EU, aims to replace natural gas with hydrogen in steel furnaces.
- The initiative includes developing a digital twin to optimize furnace operations and can be scaled to other SSAB processes.
- With a budget of €8 million and nine participating firms, half of the funding comes from the EU for the three-year project.
Steel company SSAB has announced its involvement in the Twinghy project to drive the adoption of hydrogen within the industry. This initiative, partly supported by the EU, is focused on integrating hydrogen as a fuel to replace natural gas in the heating furnaces of the steel sector. SSAB highlighted that the project will also work on creating a digital twin to regulate furnace behavior and enhance operational efficiency, emphasizing the potential application across various processes within SSAB. The project, commencing in 2023 and spanning three years, possesses a budget of €8 million, with nine companies participating. Notably, 50% of the project's funding is sourced from the EU, signaling a significant investment in promoting hydrogen technologies for industrial use.
