Swiss passenger shipbuilder Shiptec has secured approval for its hydrogen fuel-cell ferries Saphir and Quinten Lebt from Lloyd's Register to operate on Lake Lucerne and Lake Walen. The Saphir, with a capacity of 300 passengers, will undergo retrofitting with a hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system for its round trips on Lake Lucerne. On the other hand, the Quinten Lebt, a 12-person hybrid hydrogen catamaran, will be purpose-built to serve specific piers on Lake Walen. Both designs have been certified using LR's Risk-based Certification process, ensuring the safety of the hydrogen fuel-cell systems onboard. This certification marks a significant milestone in the use of hydrogen as a marine fuel, reflecting a shift towards zero-emissions vessels in Swiss passenger transportation. Shiptec's CTO, Martin Einsiedler, expressed pride in pioneering the integration of hydrogen fuel-cell systems on passenger vessels, highlighting the environmental benefits and customer trust in their innovative approach. LR's Technical Advisory Manager, Luke Shu, emphasized the effectiveness of hydrogen fuel-cells in transitioning fleets to sustainable solutions and LR's commitment to supporting partners in this transition. This collaboration signifies a joint effort towards sustainable maritime practices and environmental protection in Switzerland.
