Tokyo Commodity Exchange, Inc. (TOCOM) has entered into an agreement to collaborate with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (Tokyo MG) on a project focused on trial trading of green hydrogen. This partnership will see TOCOM engaging in trial trading activities in conjunction with Tokyo MG in December. The Japanese government is actively exploring the potential of hydrogen as a significant energy source in its pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To support this goal, a Basic Hydrogen Strategy is being developed. The Tokyo MG has also identified green hydrogen, produced through the utilization of renewable energy, as a fundamental component in decarbonization efforts and is actively promoting its adoption. As part of this initiative, TOCOM expresses its support for the establishment of a hydrogen exchange as proposed by the Tokyo MG and aims to play a role in its realization. Leveraging the market operation expertise of JPX Group, TOCOM will collaborate with the Tokyo MG to develop the necessary rule framework for the project and oversee market operations. JPX has already launched a dedicated webpage, in Japanese, on 29 November 2024, specifically for the green hydrogen trial trading project. The page will serve as a platform for providing regular updates and sharing the latest developments related to the initiative.
