Forestal del Atlántico, a Spanish shipping and chemicals company, has selected Danish technology firm Topsoe as the technology provider and engineering partner for the e-methanol project called Triskelion in Galicia, Spain. Topsoe will supply its e-methanol reactor and catalyst technologies, along with engineering support, for a project expected to produce 40,000 tons of e-methanol annually while capturing and using approximately 56,000 tons of CO2, aiding in decarbonization efforts. The e-methanol is targeted for applications in shipping and chemicals industries, with an anticipated annual emission avoidance of about 860,000 tons of CO2e. The project received a €49 million grant from the EU Emissions Trading System’s Innovation Fund, highlighting its commitment to sustainability. The final investment decision is slated for June 2025, with operations scheduled to begin in January 2028. Topsoe's CEO of Power-to-X expressed enthusiasm about the project's potential impact on decarbonizing energy-intensive sectors. Forestal del Atlántico's CEO emphasized the importance of partnering with leading technology suppliers to achieve successful decarbonization, marking a significant shift from using fossil-origin methanol. Additionally, Topsoe has engaged in various agreements with companies worldwide for low-carbon projects, showcasing its global presence and commitment to sustainable solutions.
