TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate to Decarbonize Hydrogen Production in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed agreements to produce and deliver 45,000 tons of green hydrogen a year in the Netherlands, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 450,000 tons annually.
  • A joint venture equally held by the two companies will operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, cutting CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tons a year and representing a total investment of around €600 million.
  • TotalEnergies will also receive 15,000 tons per year of green hydrogen for its Antwerp platform, contributing to the decarbonization of its industrial assets by 2030.
  • The projects, supported by European and national subsidy programs, are part of efforts to promote renewable energy and low-carbon hydrogen production in Europe, showcasing a commitment to reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have come together in a collaboration to advance the decarbonization of hydrogen production in the Netherlands, aligning with TotalEnergies' goal to decarbonize hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. The partnership involves the development of two projects aimed at producing and delivering 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, predominantly sourced from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by up to 450,000 tons per year from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands. The agreement includes the establishment of a new joint venture, evenly shared between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, to construct and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery. This electrolyzer is anticipated to enable the production of around 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, playing a pivotal role in cutting the site's CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tons annually. Moreover, TotalEnergies will benefit from a tolling agreement with Air Liquide's ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, dedicating 130 MW for the production of 15,000 tons of green hydrogen yearly for the Antwerp platform. By leveraging renewable electricity from the OranjeWind project, TotalEnergies aims to reduce CO2 emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tons a year upon the project's completion by the end of 2027. The investments made by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide in these projects underscore their commitment to sustainable practices and decarbonization efforts. The initiatives align with European renewable energy targets and signify a substantial step towards reducing emissions in challenging sectors like industry and heavy mobility. Through these ventures, the companies aim to support Europe's decarbonized growth and contribute to a low-carbon future.
