TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Partner to Develop Green Hydrogen Projects in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have joined forces to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually in the Netherlands.
  • The projects aim to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by up to 450,000 tonnes per year in refineries across Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • A joint venture will be established to operate a 250-MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery, with an expected commissioning in 2029.
  • The collaboration will help meet European renewable energy targets and contribute to decarbonization efforts in industry and heavy mobility.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have announced a partnership to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands. These projects will collectively produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable power sources, primarily from the OranjeWind offshore windfarm. The initiatives are set to cut CO2 emissions by up to 450,000 tonnes each year in TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands while supporting European renewable energy goals. In a joint venture equally shared by both companies, a 250-MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery will be built and operated to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tonnes yearly. Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide for 130 MW of an electrolyser project in Maasvlakte to produce 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly for the Antwerp platform. By supplying renewable electrons from the OranjeWind project, TotalEnergies aims to decarbonize its assets, with an expected operational timeline by 2027. The collaboration emphasizes the importance of these flagship projects in emissions reduction, particularly in challenging sectors like heavy mobility and industry. The leaders of both companies expressed their commitment to driving European renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, positioning themselves as key players in the journey towards decarbonization.
