Tunisia and France Partner to Develop Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Project for European Market
Key Ideas
  • Tunisia's Ministry of Industry partners with French developer HDF Energy to create a 1 GW green hydrogen project for European and domestic use.
  • The project includes a mix of wind power, solar PV energy, and electrolysers to produce 65 kt of hydrogen, with an initial investment of €3bn.
  • Tunisia plans to produce 8.3 Mt of green hydrogen by 2050, aiming to lead in hydrogen production with a potential total investment of €120bn.
  • The green hydrogen will be exported to Europe through the SoutH2 corridor, enhancing Tunisia's position in the hydrogen market.
Tunisia's Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has collaborated with French hydrogen developer HDF Energy to embark on a significant endeavor - the development of a large-scale green hydrogen project. This project, aimed at catering to both the European market and domestic requirements, boasts impressive figures with a potential capacity of 1 GW of wind power, 500 MW of solar PV energy, and 800 MW of electrolysers to produce up to 65 kt of hydrogen. The initial investment for this venture is estimated to be around €3bn. At the core of this initiative is Tunisia's ambition to establish itself as a key player in hydrogen production, leveraging its abundant solar and wind energy resources. By setting a target to produce 8.3 Mt of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2050, Tunisia envisions a future where 2.3 Mt would serve the domestic market while a significant 6 Mt would be earmarked for export. This endeavor comes with an expected total investment amounting to €120bn, indicating the magnitude of the country's commitment to the green hydrogen sector. Furthermore, the strategic move to export green hydrogen to Europe through the SoutH2 corridor, a hydrogen pipeline project, reinforces Tunisia's position as a crucial player in the hydrogen market, especially in facilitating hydrogen imports to key demand clusters in countries like Italy, Austria, and Germany.
