Tunisia-France Green Hydrogen Partnership for European Market Expansion
Key Ideas
  • Tunisia's Ministry partners with French developer HDF Energy for a 1 GW green hydrogen project, signaling a move towards renewable energy.
  • The project includes wind and solar energy components along with electrolysers to produce 65 kt of hydrogen, with €3bn initial investment.
  • Green hydrogen export to Europe is planned through the SoutH2 corridor, enhancing energy trade and meeting hydrogen demand in key European countries.
Tunisia's Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has taken a significant step in the renewable energy sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the French hydrogen developer, HDF Energy. The collaboration aims to establish a large-scale green hydrogen project that not only caters to domestic needs but also targets the European market. The proposed project boasts a substantial capacity, with plans for 1 GW of wind power, 500 MW of solar PV energy, and 800 MW of electrolysers dedicated to producing up to 65 kt of hydrogen. This ambitious initiative comes with an estimated initial investment of about €3bn, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy solutions. One of the key highlights of the project is the intended export of green hydrogen to Europe utilizing the SoutH2 corridor. This pipeline project, designed to facilitate hydrogen imports from North Africa to southern Italy and subsequently to major hydrogen demand hubs in Italy, Austria, and Germany, signifies a strategic move towards enhancing international energy trade and meeting the increasing demand for hydrogen in Europe. The partnership between Tunisia and France in this green hydrogen venture not only demonstrates a collaborative effort in the renewable energy sector but also paves the way for a more sustainable and interconnected energy future.
