UK Government Calls for Insights on Innovative Hydrogen to Power Projects
Key Ideas
  • The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is seeking insights on innovative hydrogen to power projects to enhance readiness for deployment by 2030.
  • The UK government aims to achieve clean energy goals by advancing low-carbon technologies like H2P to reduce reliance on unabated gas.
  • DESNZ is spearheading the Hydrogen to Power Business Model to address deployment challenges and reduce investment risks in H2P projects.
  • Stakeholders are encouraged to contribute to building a clearer picture of the landscape for innovative H2P projects that align with the Clean Power 2030 target.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in the United Kingdom has issued a call for insights on innovative hydrogen to power (H2P) projects. This call for evidence aims to gather technical information to support the deployment and technical demonstrations of such projects, particularly those expected to be operational by 2030. The government is interested in understanding project scopes, timelines, costs, and deployment challenges to prepare for the construction of large-scale hydrogen infrastructure. The integration of dispatchable power technologies, like H2P, is crucial in meeting clean energy goals and achieving net zero commitments. The government envisions H2P as a key element in balancing energy demands and reducing reliance on unabated gas, providing inter-seasonal storage and a decarbonisation pathway. To facilitate the deployment of H2P projects, DESNZ is leading the Hydrogen to Power Business Model (H2PBM) to mitigate investment risks and deployment challenges. The UK government anticipates the need for dispatchable and long-duration flexible capacity by 2030 and views H2P as a technology that can offer low-carbon dispatchable generation. DESNZ is engaging with stakeholders to advance innovative H2P projects and integrate them into the Capacity Market to create a decarbonisation pathway for existing gas generation. Despite the time required to establish frameworks for hydrogen production, transport, and storage, the government remains committed to progressing towards the Clean Power 2030 target. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide their insights to build a clearer understanding of the landscape for innovative H2P projects. The deadline for submissions is 12 May 2025.
