US DOE Invests in Clean Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Innovations with $3.4m Grant
Key Ideas
  • The US DOE has allocated $3.4m to support 17 projects focused on clean hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
  • This funding is part of the Small Business Research and Development Grant, aiming to advance affordable clean hydrogen solutions.
  • The DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office selected projects across various states, covering areas such as hydrogen storage, fuel cell operation, and electrolysis.
  • In addition to these grants, the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy in the US is being accelerated with a separate funding of up to $59m.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $3.4m investment to support the research and development of clean hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. This funding, allocated under the Small Business Research and Development Grant, will benefit 17 projects selected by the DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office. These projects, part of the 2024 Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards, cover a wide range of areas such as hydrogen refueling, hydrogen storage, fuel cell systems, and electrolysis. The aim of this initiative is to advance affordable clean hydrogen technologies in the US. The funded projects include innovative solutions like cryogenic composite seals for liquid hydrogen service components, thermally stable nanoporous membranes for PEM fuel cells, and precious-metal-free coatings for PEM electrolyser bipolar plates. The funding is part of the broader effort to accelerate the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy in the US, with a separate $59m funding allocation announced in December 2023. The recent funding announcement is part of the DOE's commitment to driving research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) of clean hydrogen technologies. The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) also received funding from the DOE to establish a hydrogen hub, further contributing to the growth of hydrogen initiatives in the US. The investments aim to ensure the viability and technological advancement of hydrogen hubs across the country.
