French project developer Verso Energy has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Finnish city of Oulu to collaborate on a groundbreaking project. The €1.4bn facility will focus on processing green hydrogen to produce synthetic aviation fuels, known as e-SAF. Oulu's government is actively involved in supporting the project by facilitating the zoning of the city port's green transition industrial area to align with the requirements of the project. This initiative has the potential to generate 80,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually, which is a significant step towards sustainable aviation practices. Marko Kilpeläinen, the director of urban environment services for Oulu, highlighted the advantage of Finland's zoning process, which allows for parallel progress with companies' project planning, offering a higher degree of flexibility compared to other countries. The collaboration between Verso Energy and Oulu exemplifies a positive stride towards green hydrogen innovation and sustainable fuel production for the aviation sector.
