The Victorian Government has unveiled a new renewable hydrogen backup system in Neerim North to enhance energy resilience during storms and other extreme weather events. This initiative, part of a broader $1.1 million investment in the Telstra hydrogen fuel cell pilot project, aims to ensure mobile coverage is maintained during power outages. The 10-kilowatt renewable hydrogen generators can provide up to 72 hours of backup power by utilizing hydrogen fuel cells similar to batteries. Victoria's Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, highlighted the importance of renewable hydrogen in strengthening energy resilience and supporting communities reliably and affordably. The pilot project has deployed five hydrogen fuel cells in storm-affected areas like Coldstream and Kinglake. This effort is part of the $6.6 million renewable hydrogen commercialisation pathways fund, which also supports projects by various companies. Energys Australia, the manufacturer of the hydrogen fuel cells, has received backing to establish a renewable hydrogen production facility to encourage the use of renewable hydrogen in Victoria. Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing, emphasized the government's focus on delivering more renewables to improve emergency support and communication with essential services during outages.
