Yara International Leads Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production at Herøya Industrial Park
Key Ideas
  • Yara International inaugurates Europe's largest green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility in Norway, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 41,000 tonnes annually.
  • The company plans to drive the green transition by producing low-carbon fertilisers and green ammonia, with the first deliveries already made to partners.
  • Yara's focus on decarbonisation includes developing renewable ammonia at scale and utilizing carbon capture storage to advance the hydrogen economy and low-emission ammonia markets.
  • The Hydrogen Zero Emission Maritime (HyZEM) project, supported by funding from Innovate UK and Australia, aims to develop an international green hydrogen maritime project for high-powered work boats.
Norwegian chemical company Yara International has unveiled the largest green hydrogen and green ammonia production facility in Europe at Herøya Industrial Park, Norway. The 24MW renewable hydrogen plant, opened by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, utilizes electrolysis of water and renewable energy to produce hydrogen, replacing natural gas and cutting carbon emissions by 41,000 tonnes annually. Yara, a long-standing global crop nutrition company, now aims to lead the green transition in fertiliser production and shipping by introducing low-carbon fertilisers and green ammonia to its portfolio. With a focus on decarbonisation, Yara plans to scale up production of renewable ammonia and explore carbon capture storage (CCS) to support the hydrogen economy and low-emission ammonia markets. Additionally, the HyZEM project, funded by Innovate UK and Australia, is working on a green hydrogen maritime initiative led by Steamology to optimize storage and power systems for high-powered work boats using breakthrough technologies in hydrogen storage and turbines.
