Ballard Power Systems Signs Long Term Supply Agreement for Fuel Cell Engines with Canadian Pacific Kansas City
Key Ideas
- Ballard Power Systems has signed a Long Term Supply Agreement with Canadian Pacific Kansas City for the supply of 98 fuel cell engines for the North American freight rail market, totaling 20 MW of fuel cell power.
- The agreement builds on an existing partnership that began in 2021, with Ballard having delivered around 10 MW of fuel cell engines so far for hydrogen-powered locomotives in Alberta, Canada.
- CPKC is integrating Ballard fuel cell engines into hydrogen-powered locomotives for switching and freight service applications, aiming to decarbonize their locomotive fleet and electrify freight rail.
- Randy MacEwen, President and CEO of Ballard Power, expressed excitement about advancing CPKC's decarbonization vision and the confidence in hydrogen fuel cells as a sustainable alternative to diesel engines.
Ballard Power Systems has announced the signing of a Long Term Supply Agreement (LTSA) with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) for the supply of 98 fuel cell engines to be used in the North American freight rail market. These engines, each with a nameplate of 200 kW, will total around 20 megawatts (MW) of fuel cell power, with deliveries expected in 2025. The LTSA expands on the collaboration between Ballard and CPKC that began in 2021 and has already seen the delivery of approximately 10 MW of fuel cell engines, integrated into hydrogen-powered locomotives in Alberta, Canada.
The partnership between the two companies aims to advance CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program, with a focus on decarbonizing the locomotive fleet and electrifying freight rail operations across North America. CPKC has been testing prototype diesel freight locomotives retrofitted with hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and battery packs since 2022, with three hydrogen locomotives currently in operation.
Randy MacEwen, President and CEO of Ballard Power Systems, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to strengthen their relationship with CPKC and contribute to the decarbonization efforts in the rail industry. He highlighted the environmental benefits of hydrogen fuel cells, such as long-range capabilities, fast refueling, heavy payload capacities, and suitability for cold weather operations.
Ballard Power Systems focuses on delivering fuel cell power solutions for sustainable mobility, including buses, trucks, trains, marine vessels, and stationary power applications. The company's vision is centered on enabling the electrification of various modes of transport to support a sustainable planet. The announcement also included information on the risks and uncertainties involved in the deployment of fuel cell technology, emphasizing the importance of addressing market demand and achieving profitability in the evolving landscape of clean energy solutions.
