GAIL Accelerates Net-Zero Targets and Hydrogen Collaboration in India
Key Ideas
  • GAIL partners with Accelera by Cummins to focus on hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage, advancing its clean energy initiatives.
  • The memorandum of understanding (MOU) at India Energy Week 2025 aims to explore hydrogen's use in sectors like transport, power, and steel, alongside natural gas.
  • GAIL has moved up its scope 1 and scope 2 net-zero targets from 2040 to 2035, showing a commitment to accelerating its environmental sustainability efforts.
  • The company has also invested in compressed biogas (CBG) plants, grain-based ethanol production, and synthetic natural gas projects to further enhance its energy portfolio.
GAIL, a prominent energy company in India, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Accelera by Cummins to collaborate on green energy and energy transition technologies. This partnership, established during India Energy Week 2025, focuses on advancing hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage. By leveraging Accelera's expertise in new energy sectors and GAIL's robust natural gas infrastructure, the companies aim to explore the potential of hydrogen as a mono fuel and in combinations with LNG/CNG in various sectors such as transport, power, and steel. In addition to hydrogen initiatives, GAIL has accelerated its scope 1 and scope 2 net-zero targets, moving them up from 2040 to 2035. This shift demonstrates GAIL's commitment to achieving environmental sustainability goals at an earlier timeline. The company has already taken steps towards cleaner energy by commissioning a 10MW green hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant and exploring hydrogen blending in its gas distribution network. Furthermore, GAIL has ventured into the renewable energy sector by establishing a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi and planning to set up more across India. Collaborating with Leafiniti Bioenergy, GAIL is also developing multiple CBG plants and partnering with Coal India for synthetic natural gas production. Additionally, the company has initiatives in ethanol production, aiming to set up a significant ethanol plant in Rajasthan. Financially, GAIL has reported positive growth, with increased revenue and profits for the nine months ending in December 2024. The company's revenue from operations saw a significant rise, showcasing its financial strength and sustainable business growth trajectory.
