A&O Shearman recently advised lenders and a cover provider on the USD1.150bn project financing for a state-of-the-art greenfield polypropylene production facility in Adana, Türkiye. The joint venture between Rönesans Holding A.S and Sonatrach Petroleum Investment Corporation B.V aims to develop a facility featuring a propane dehydrogenation unit and a polypropylene unit, with a capacity of 472,500 MT per annum. Notably, the facility will use 100% renewable electricity and internally generated hydrogen as fuel, significantly reducing its environmental impact.
The facility is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 72% compared to conventional methods, contributing to reducing Türkiye's polymer trade deficit by substituting imports with domestic production. Furthermore, it will create employment opportunities, promote knowledge transfer, introduce new industrial activities, and strengthen Türkiye's position in polymers processing. This initiative is set to position Türkiye as a potential global hub for petrochemicals production.
A&O Shearman's deal team, led by Lorraine Bayliss, with support from other legal professionals, provided key advice on the transaction. Umut Gurgey from Gedik & Eraksoy offered legal advice on Turkish law aspects. The project represents a significant step towards sustainable petrochemicals production and economic development in Türkiye.
