Rompetrol Rafinare, a company in Romania, announced the successful completion of the modernisation project for the hydrogen power plant (HPP) at its Petromidia Refinery located in Navodari, Constanta county. This project, which cost nearly $10 million, aimed to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the hydrogen production unit. The key focus was on replacing the subassemblies of the reformer furnace, specifically the 114 vertical tubes storing the catalyst essential for the reforming reaction. The refurbishment was executed by four subcontracting companies with the supervision of Rominserv, KazMunayGas International Group's local maintenance and engineering arm. The HPP unit, with a capacity of 40,000 cubic meters per hour, is crucial for supplying hydrogen to the Petromidia refinery. This hydrogen is produced through steam reformation of methane gas and plays a pivotal role in sulfur extraction processes, supporting the production of fuels compliant with Euro5 standards. Despite Rompetrol Rafinare reporting a net loss in early 2024, the company remains committed to strategic investments in its facilities to ensure operational excellence and maintain industry standards. Rompetrol Rafinare is part of KMG International, previously known as The Rompetrol Group, fully owned by Kazakhstan's state-owned energy company KazMunayGas Group. The company's main shareholders include KMG International and the Romanian state. Rompetrol operates the Petromidia and Vega refineries, playing a significant role in the oil industry within Romania. Rompetrol's shares were noted to be trading flat on the Bucharest bourse following the modernisation of its hydrogen power plant.
