Construction has begun on Spain's largest green hydrogen project in Castellon, developed jointly by bp and Iberdrola Espana. The project involves the adaptation of a plot of land next to the BP refinery in Castellon, with civil engineering works and the installation of main equipment, including electrolysers, scheduled. This initiative, with an investment exceeding EUR70 million, is set to create up to 500 jobs during construction, engaging approximately 25 Spanish companies. The project aims to produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, replacing grey hydrogen and reducing CO2 emissions by 23,000 tonnes yearly. The green hydrogen plant is expected to be operational by the second half of 2026, powered by renewable electricity sourced from Iberdrola's wind and photovoltaic farms. The project aligns with EU requirements for green hydrogen production and is a significant step in industrial decarbonisation, with the potential to impact industries like ceramics, chemical, and heavy transport, aiding in their decarbonization efforts. Additionally, the project has received funding through Spanish and EU support programs. The awarding of the transformer manufacturing and supply contract to Spanish company Imefy demonstrates faith in the local industry, providing opportunities for innovation and growth.
