UK Consortium Advances Zero Emission HGV Project with Battery Electric and Hydrogen Demonstrations
Key Ideas
- The ZENFreight consortium in the UK is accelerating the deployment of Battery Electric and Hydrogen HGVs to decarbonize heavy goods vehicle operations.
- 78 vehicles, including 62 BEV and 16 H2 trucks, will be deployed across leading fleet operators, academic partners, and truck manufacturers.
- The project aims to gather data over a five-year demonstration phase to support the business case for scaling zero-emission HGV deployment.
- A nationwide network of depot-based electric charging and hydrogen refueling stations will be developed across 25 depots to support the transition to sustainable transport solutions.
The Zero Emission National (ZEN) Freight consortium in the UK, as part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme, has rebooted its project to focus on Battery Electric and Hydrogen HGV demonstrations. The consortium, led by Dynamon, will deploy 78 vehicles, including 62 BEV and 16 H2 trucks, across fleet operators like DFDS, Eddie Stobart, and more. These vehicles will be benchmarked against diesel equivalents to accelerate decarbonization. The consortium will also establish a network of charging and refueling stations at 25 depots to support the adoption of zero-emission HGVs. The project, supported by £43 million in government funding, aims to collect data over five years to facilitate the scaling of sustainable transport solutions.
