Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced the establishment of a new hydrogen innovation centre in Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and Guidance Tamil Nadu, with the support of the state government. The centre, to be located within the IIT Madras Thaiyur campus on the outskirts of Chennai, will cover 65,000 sq ft and is expected to be operational by 2026. An investment of Rs 180 crore will be directed towards developing a dedicated facility for research in hydrogen technology. This initiative aligns with HMIL's commitment to support the Tamil Nadu government's vision of creating a sustainable ecosystem for transitioning to alternative fuels, particularly hydrogen. The focus areas of the hydrogen innovation centre will include electrolyzer development for green hydrogen generation, localizing manufacturing and supply chain for electrolyzers and fuel cells, as well as establishing pilot demonstrators and a hydrogen refueling station for research in hydrogen mobility. This strategic move by HMIL aims to position hydrogen as a clean and emission-less propulsion source for future mass-mobility solutions, in line with their global vision of 'Progress for Humanity'.
