India's Green Hydrogen Revolution: GAIL Commissions First Plant in Madhya Pradesh
Key Ideas
  • GAIL commissions its first green hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh, producing 4.3 tonnes per day using renewable energy sources.
  • India aims for 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030, aligning with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Other companies like Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Reliance Industries, and Adani Group are also investing in green hydrogen projects, showcasing a national commitment to sustainable energy.
  • The projects signify India's move towards reducing carbon emissions and becoming self-reliant in clean energy, contributing to the global clean energy transition.
GAIL, the Gas Authority of India Ltd, has taken a significant step in the realm of alternative energy sources by commissioning its first green hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh. The plant, equipped with a 10 MW proton exchange membrane Electrolyzer from Canada, can produce 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day with a purity of about 99.999%. This initiative falls in line with India's ambitious target of achieving 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The hydrogen initially produced will be used for internal processes at the Vijaipur plant, with future plans to distribute to retail customers in nearby regions. Additionally, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Reliance Industries, and the Adani Group are also venturing into green hydrogen projects, further solidifying India's commitment to sustainable energy practices. These efforts not only aim to reduce carbon emissions but also support India's aspiration of self-reliance in clean energy, driving the global transition towards cleaner energy sources.
