Worley and Shell have joined forces on two significant projects aimed at decarbonizing operations in Germany, specifically at the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland near Cologne. The first project involves converting the site’s hydrocracker into a base oil production unit to produce high-quality lubricants, thereby reducing carbon emissions significantly. The plant's capacity is expected to meet a substantial portion of the demand for base oils in the EU and Germany. In addition to the hydrocracker conversion, the collaboration includes the installation of a 100 MW electrolyzer as part of the REFHYNE II project. This electrolyzer will be crucial in producing renewable hydrogen, with the aim of generating energy products with lower carbon intensity and further advancing decarbonization efforts. Worley's involvement in the design and integration processes of the electrolyzer project has been pivotal, with the recent achievement of a final investment decision in July 2024. Both projects reflect Shell's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, with the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland playing a key role in this transformation.
