TotalEnergies has entered into an agreement with RWE, a German developer, to supply 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to the Leuna refinery in Germany starting from 2030. This move supports TotalEnergies' objective to decarbonize the hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. The green hydrogen will be generated by a 300 MW electrolyzer in Lingen, operated by RWE, and stored locally. To facilitate the transportation of hydrogen, a 600 km pipeline will be utilized to deliver it to the Leuna refinery, thereby helping to decrease the refinery's CO2 emissions by approximately 300,000 tons each year. Patrick Pouyanné, the Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, commended the significance of this agreement in reducing CO2 emissions at Leuna and recognized the support of German authorities in establishing the required infrastructure for green hydrogen. Markus Krebber, the CEO of RWE, emphasized that this partnership marks a significant milestone in the advancement of green hydrogen, showcasing its feasibility with appropriate customer incentives. TotalEnergies' overarching goal is to diminish its carbon footprint and has already secured contracts for over 200,000 tons of green and renewable hydrogen annually to decarbonize its European refineries.
