Key Ideas
  • New Flyer of America secures a record order for 108 hydrogen fuel-cell buses from SamTrans in California.
  • The purchase aligns with California's emission reduction targets and will help SamTrans transition to a zero-emission fleet by 2040.
  • The investment is supported by federal, state, and local funds, promoting the adoption of hydrogen fuel-cell technology in public transportation.
  • The growth potential for the global hydrogen fuel cell bus sector is significant, with technologies offering competitive advantages over battery electric vehicles.
New Flyer of America, a subsidiary of NFI Group, has received an order for 108 hydrogen fuel-cell Xcelsior CHARGE FC 40-foot buses from San Mateo County Transit (SamTrans) in California. This order represents the largest hydrogen fuel-cell bus order in New Flyer's history. The buses will help SamTrans, which serves San Francisco, Palo Alto, and San Mateo County, in its transition to a zero-emission fleet to meet sustainability targets set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The investment is backed by funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), California's HVIP vouchers, and local sources. Hydrogen, known for its environmental benefits due to the absence of carbon emissions, can be produced sustainably through processes like electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. The article highlights the forecasted growth of the global hydrogen fuel cell bus sector and the advantages it offers in terms of range and refueling time compared to battery electric vehicles. This initiative reflects a positive step towards cleaner transportation and aligns with the broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
