Caterpillar Inc Expands Hydrogen Capabilities in Power Generation Portfolio
Key Ideas
- Caterpillar introduces hydrogen-capable gas generators, offering 12- and 16-cylinder versions for various applications.
- Customers can now retrofit existing CG260 generator sets for hydrogen blending, expanding Caterpillar's sustainable power solutions.
- Collaboration with Ballard Power Systems demonstrates successful use of large-format hydrogen fuel cells for data center back-up power.
Caterpillar Inc has enhanced its power generation portfolio by introducing gas generators capable of running hydrogen blends. The Cat CG260 generators, in 12- and 16-cylinder versions, can provide 4.5MW of continuous electric power and are approved to run on gas with up to 25% hydrogen content. The company also offers retrofit kits to update existing CG260 generators for hydrogen compatibility. Melissa Busen, Vice President for Caterpillar Large Electric Power, highlighted the acceleration towards lower carbon solutions and Caterpillar's readiness to assist customers in integrating hydrogen-fueled systems. Caterpillar's lineup now includes models from 400kW to 4.5MW with hydrogen blending options through retrofitting. Notably, the Cat G3516 generator can operate on 100% hydrogen, ideal for locations with abundant hydrogen supply. Moreover, Caterpillar's collaboration with Ballard Power Systems showcased the successful deployment of a 1.5MW fuel cell solution for providing back-up power to a Microsoft data center in the US, emphasizing the potential of hydrogen fuel cells in ensuring reliable power supply.
