Cargo logistics firm DHL Supply Chain, in partnership with beverage company Diageo North America and truck manufacturer Nikola Corp, introduced two hydrogen fuel cell-electric trucks into its fleet in Illinois. These Class 8 trucks are being fueled by Nikola's HYLA hydrogen refueling station at Diageo's campus in Plainfield. The hydrogen trucks are noted for their environmental advantages as they do not emit carbon dioxide and offer longer driving range and quicker refueling times compared to battery electric trucks. The deployment of these hydrogen vehicles is part of DHL's sustainability strategy, aiming to decarbonize its business with a focus on 'Green Logistics of Choice.' The trucks are expected to replace diesel vehicles, resulting in an 80% reduction in emissions over a year. The collaborative effort between DHL, Diageo, and Nikola involved meticulous planning over 18 months, including coordination with local authorities to enable the seamless operation of hydrogen refueling assets. Nikola's strategic shift towards hydrogen technology has been reinforced through partnerships with various companies. The success of this initiative not only highlights the environmental benefits of hydrogen vehicles but also showcases the commitment of industry leaders towards sustainable transportation solutions.
