Empowering Innovation: Stralis and CQUniversity Collaborate on Hydrogen-Electric Aircraft Project
Key Ideas
  • Stralis and CQUniversity are partnering to develop long-range hydrogen-electric propulsion systems for aviation in Queensland.
  • Funded by the Queensland Government, the project aims to design a heat management system for a high-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cell.
  • The collaboration between industry and academia is crucial for advancing knowledge and translating innovation into industrial applications in the aviation sector.
  • The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of decarbonizing aviation by flying a hydrogen-powered aircraft from Gladstone to Brisbane.
Stralis Aircraft and CQUniversity have teamed up to work on an innovative project to develop hydrogen-electric propulsion systems for aviation, with a focus on decarbonizing the industry and promoting a cleaner future. The collaboration, supported by the Regional University Industry Collaboration (RUIC) Program, aims to design a heat management system for a high-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) that will be integrated into Stralis' hydrogen-powered aircraft. The project, funded by the Queensland Government and facilitated by CSIRO, aims to showcase how collaborative research can drive innovation in the aviation sector. Stralis plans to test their hydrogen-electric propulsion system with a Bonanza A36 aircraft in Queensland by late 2025, with the ultimate goal of flying a hydrogen-powered aircraft from Gladstone to Brisbane to demonstrate the feasibility of decarbonizing aviation. The collaboration between Stralis and CQUniversity, as part of the Hydrogen Flight Alliance, highlights the importance of industry-academia partnerships in advancing technology and fostering sustainable practices in aviation. CQUniversity's expertise in hydrogen and renewable energy, particularly through the Centre for Hydrogen and Renewable Energy in Gladstone, is instrumental in supporting projects like Stralis' innovative liquid hydrogen fuel cell electric propulsion system. This collaboration exemplifies how regional partnerships and research initiatives can contribute to the global effort towards a cleaner and more sustainable aviation industry.
