HD KSOE, HD Hydrogen, and DNV Collaborate on Advanced Carbon Capture Technology for Ship Propulsion
Key Ideas
  • HD KSOE, HD Hydrogen, and DNV have partnered to develop efficient pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology for carbon capture in SOFCs.
  • The goal is to transition from conventional ship propulsion to using SOFCs for ship propulsion and power generation.
  • SOFCs offer high efficiency and can utilize LNG, ammonia, or hydrogen for electricity generation, with a focus on carbon capture for LNG-powered fuel cells.
  • The collaboration aims to enhance energy efficiency in maritime applications and reduce emissions while transitioning to carbon-neutral fuels.
HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), together with HD Hydrogen and DNV, have entered into an agreement to develop and validate pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology for carbon capture in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The focus of this collaboration is to revolutionize ship propulsion by replacing traditional methods with SOFCs for both propulsion and power generation. SOFCs are known for their advanced efficiency and versatility, capable of generating electricity from a variety of sources such as LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen. The utilization of carbon capture technology in SOFCs is crucial for reducing emissions, especially in the case of LNG-powered fuel cells. The PSA technology works by capturing and releasing CO2 through pressure adjustments within a capture chamber, offering a significant improvement in energy efficiency compared to traditional CO2 absorption methods used in maritime operations. Vidar Dolonen, the regional manager for DNV Korea & Japan, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in addressing the challenge of decarbonizing shipping. He highlighted the need for a combination of solutions to transition towards carbon-neutral fuels, with a focus on enhancing energy efficiency and implementing onboard carbon capture technologies. Overall, this partnership showcases a positive step towards promoting sustainability in the maritime industry by leveraging innovative technologies to reduce emissions and advance the use of alternative fuels in ship operations.
