Western Australia's Murchison Green Hydrogen Project Receives Funding Boost
Key Ideas
  • The Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia secures funding under the Hydrogen Headstart program, receiving up to $814 million over a decade.
  • Situated near Kalbarri, the project by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners will be powered by solar, wind, and battery energy, operating off-grid.
  • The project aims to create 3,600 construction jobs and 600 ongoing jobs, unlock private investment, and provide new export opportunities for renewable ammonia.
  • Hydrogen Headstart program, administered by ARENA, supports large-scale renewable hydrogen projects in Australia with operating funding.
The Murchison Green Hydrogen (MGH) Project in Western Australia has been awarded as the first recipient of funding under the Hydrogen Headstart program. This 1500 MW project, located near Kalbarri, will receive up to $814 million in production support over a 10-year period starting later in the decade. Developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), the project will run completely off-grid, with Stage 1 powered by a combination of 1,200 MW of solar photovoltaic, 1,700 MW of onshore wind, and a 600 MW/2-hour battery energy storage system. The renewable ammonia produced by the project is planned to be exported to several countries including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, or Europe. Water supply for the project will be sourced from a new desalination plant. The development of the MGH project is expected to create around 3,600 construction jobs at its peak and maintain 600 ongoing jobs. Additionally, it is projected to attract private investment and open up new export avenues. The Hydrogen Headstart program, managed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), aims to support large-scale renewable hydrogen projects in the country by providing operating funding assistance. This initiative highlights the commitment towards renewable energy development and sustainable practices in Australia.
