India's Green Hydrogen Drive in Steel Manufacturing: MECON Calls for Proposals
Key Ideas
  • MECON Limited in India seeks proposals for using Hydrogen in steel production processes like DRI Pilot Plant and Blast Furnace.
  • Indian government's focus on green hydrogen aims to reduce fossil fuel dependency in the steel sector.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission allocates Rs 455 crore for green hydrogen projects in the steel industry by 2029-30.
  • The initiative supports technologies like DRI production using 100% Hydrogen and injecting Hydrogen in DRI making units to reduce coal consumption.
MECON Limited in India has initiated a move towards green hydrogen adoption in steel manufacturing by inviting proposals from interested parties. The call for proposals includes using Hydrogen in processes like DRI Pilot Plant, Blast Furnace, and DRI Vertical shaft. The Indian government, particularly the Steel Ministry, is keen on replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen in steel production, considering the sector's significant potential for such a transition. The government aims to make green-hydrogen based steel production cost-competitive in the coming years, leveraging advancements in renewable energy and electrolyzers. To further explore the usage of green hydrogen in the steel industry, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, is setting up pilot projects. A substantial budget of Rs 455 crore has been allocated for green hydrogen initiatives in the steel sector until the fiscal year 2029-30. The focus areas under this mission include developing technologies for DRI production using 100% Hydrogen, reducing coal consumption in Blast Furnaces by using Hydrogen, and gradually increasing the proportion of Hydrogen in DRI making units to maximize its utilization. These initiatives aim to advance technological expertise and practices for integrating Hydrogen into the steel-making process, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly steel industry in India.
