Innovative Ammonia Fuel System Cleared for Offshore Vessel Conversion
Key Ideas
  • A consortium led by NCE Maritime CleanTech in Norway has received preliminary approval for an innovative ammonia fuel system design for an offshore vessel.
  • The project aims to retrofit the vessel Viking Energy with a large 2 MW ammonia fuel cell, allowing it to operate on clean fuel for up to 3,000 hours annually.
  • This initiative, supported by EU funding, marks a significant milestone in transitioning towards cleaner energy solutions in the maritime sector.
  • The project also plans to scale up a 100 KW fuel cell to 2 MW and explore the potential of this technology for other vessel types in the shipping industry.
A project led by a consortium coordinated by the Norwegian cluster organization NCE Maritime CleanTech has achieved preliminary approval for the design of an ammonia fuel system meant for an offshore vessel. The project, part of the ShipFC H2020 Project, received the green light from the Norwegian Maritime Authority. The initiative involves retrofitting the Viking Energy, an offshore vessel owned by Eidesvik and operated by Equinor, with a 2 MW ammonia fuel cell, enabling it to operate using clean fuel for extended periods. The project, which secured €10 million from the EU's Horizon 2020 program, aims to ensure that a large fuel cell can safely and effectively power shipboard systems. Additionally, the project will focus on upscaling a 100 KW fuel cell to 2 MW. Notably, this endeavor represents the first installation of an ammonia-powered fuel cell on a vessel. Furthermore, the consortium plans to explore the applicability of this technology to other vessel types within the shipping industry, such as offshore construction and cargo vessels. In a separate collaboration, Eidesvik, Aker BP, and Alma are exploring the installation of Alma's ammonia fuel cell technology on two offshore support vessels, Viking Lady and NS Frayja. These efforts reflect a broader industry shift towards cleaner energy sources and innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions in maritime operations.
