Maritime Sector Unites for Clean Energy Future at COP29 in Azerbaijan
Key Ideas
  • Global industry leaders commit to increasing uptake of zero-emission shipping fuels to at least 5%, aiming for 10%, by 2030.
  • A Call to Action signed by 50+ industry leaders emphasizes the need for faster adoption of zero and near-zero emissions fuels and green hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Key recommendations include ambitious mid-term measures, revenue distribution balancing, and advancing practical milestones for scalable zero-emission fuels.
  • Close collaboration between stakeholders across the shipping value chain and strong regulatory support is highlighted as crucial for a successful clean energy transition.
At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the maritime industry is taking significant steps towards decarbonization by accelerating the adoption of zero-emission fuels. More than 50 industry leaders have pledged to increase the uptake of zero-emission shipping fuels to at least 5%, with a goal of reaching 10% by 2030. This commitment includes investing in green hydrogen infrastructure and zero-emission vessels. The initiative, led by RMI and other organizations, aims to develop a robust supply chain for green hydrogen as a marine fuel. Ahead of the upcoming regulatory meeting in 2025, industry members are calling for clear regulations to strengthen the business case for decarbonization. Recommendations include the need for ambitious mid-term measures, balanced revenue distribution to bridge the cost gap with fossil fuels, and evidence of advancing practical use of scalable zero-emission fuels. To align with a 1.5°C pathway, global green hydrogen production must double by 2030, requiring coordinated action across the supply chain. Collaboration between stakeholders including green hydrogen producers, shipping actors, and policymakers is deemed essential to drive maritime decarbonization. The Green Hydrogen Catapult and ports are supporting the initiative by investing in hydrogen-derived fuel infrastructure. The maritime sector believes that this collaborative effort will lead to a just and equitable transition to renewable fuels, emphasizing the importance of building and maintaining momentum for a sustainable future.
