Norwegian Government Fund Awards $114 Million for Hydrogen and Ammonia-Fueled Ships
Key Ideas
  • Enova, the Norwegian government's clean energy fund, is awarding $114 million to support the development of fifteen ships, with six being ammonia-fueled and nine focusing on cutting-edge hydrogen projects.
  • A variety of companies are being awarded grants for hydrogen vessels, including Hoegh Autolines, Amon Gas, Maris Fiducia, Møre Sjø, Napier, and Halten Bulk, contributing to the advancement of clean energy in the maritime sector.
  • Maris Fiducia's hydrogen project involves building five 6,000 dwt vessels optimized for efficiency and low fuel consumption, powered by a dual-fuel hydrogen ICE combined with fuel cells and Zero Emission Pods developed by HAV Hydrogen.
  • The project aims to establish a commercial operation for hydrogen-fueled vessels through a zero-emission time charter agreement, marking a significant step towards creating a functional value chain for hydrogen and ammonia in Norway's maritime industry.
Enova, the Norwegian government's clean energy fund, has announced its largest-ever awards of approximately $114 million to support the development of fifteen ships in the maritime sector. Six of these ships will be powered by ammonia, while nine will focus on cutting-edge hydrogen projects. Companies like Hoegh Autolines, Amon Gas, Maris Fiducia, Møre Sjø, Napier, and Halten Bulk are among the recipients of grants for hydrogen vessels. Maris Fiducia, in partnership with Dutch firm Ankerbeer, is set to build five 6,000 dwt vessels optimized for efficiency and low fuel consumption, utilizing a dual-fuel hydrogen ICE combined with fuel cells and Zero Emission Pods developed by HAV Hydrogen. Each vessel will be equipped with ZEPODs with a 400 kW capacity, upgradable to 1 MW. The project aims to establish a commercial operation for hydrogen-fueled vessels through a partnership with Schulte & Burns, marking a crucial step in creating a functional value chain for hydrogen and ammonia in Norway's maritime industry. Enova's goal is to reduce barriers for actors using hydrogen and ammonia as fuel in vessels to establish a functional value chain in Norway, with the next application deadline set for September 27.
