Key Ideas
  • Renault and Plug's joint venture, Hyvia, unveiled the Renault Master H2-Tech Prototype at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover.
  • The prototype features a new-generation 47kW fuel cell and a 20kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP range of 435 miles with quick refuelling capabilities.
  • Hyvia has developed 'Hywell' hydrogen fuel cell stations that are containerised and relocatable, providing 100kg of hydrogen daily for more than 20 vehicles.
  • The project aims to expand the hydrogen refuelling network through commercial hydrogen fuel cell fleets, offering a driving experience similar to battery electric vehicles but with longer range and quick refuelling.
At the recent IAA Transportation show in Hanover, the new Renault Master H2-Tech Prototype was unveiled by Hyvia, a joint venture between Renault and US fuel cell specialist Plug. This prototype showcases the future of hydrogen fuel cell technology in commercial vehicles, particularly heavy trucks. The project includes the development of 'Hywell' hydrogen fuel cell stations across Europe, which are designed to be containerised and relocatable for easy setup. These stations can supply 100kg of hydrogen daily, catering to more than 20 vehicles. The Master H2-Tech Prototype boasts a WLTP range of 435 miles and quick refuelling capabilities, thanks to its 47kW fuel cell and 20kWh battery pack. The fuel cell system, based on Plug technology, is manufactured at the Hyvia plant in France. With a design that combines fuel cells and batteries, the vehicle offers a longer range and quick refuelling while providing a driving experience similar to battery electric vehicles. The heat produced by the system is utilized for cabin heating, and the fuel cell operates on compressed hydrogen stored in floor tanks. The Master H2-Tech will be produced at the Renault Group plant in France, signaling a step towards sustainable transportation solutions in the form of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.
